ERA is engaged in the design and fabrication of optoelectronic
components, with particular emphasis on the interface between
optical links & electronics circuitry.
ERA is in the forefront of the design and manufacture of
the ultra wideband amplifiers used as drivers in long haul
terrestrial and undersea optical communications networks operating
at 2.5 Gbps, 10/12.5 Gbps and 20 Gbps. Several of the designs
have been licensed to volume manufacturers and suppliers of
optical components.
A recent development highlighted the performance improvements
obtained by integrating the driver and optical modulator in
a common housing, yielding improved eye diagram performance
and lower power consumption, size and weight. Other studies
have considered alternative transmission and modulation schemes,
which would enable faster and more reliable communication
over existing systems using most of the existing infrastructure.
ERA is also involved in developing local distributed wideband
microwave wireless systems, using optical fibres and local
transmitters to convert optical signals directly to radio
frequencies prior to transmission. This enables each transmitter
station to be used simultaneously for a multitude of different
wireless applications, reducing infrastructure costs and providing
additional security.
