| During recent years, significant
development and innovation have occurred to create novel products
for fuel delivery pipework systems. Petroleum underground
pipework products must be totally safe as there can be serious
fire and environmental hazards associated with leaks and permeation.
In order to assess their fitness for purpose, the Institute
of Petroleum (IP) and Shell have established performance specifications
for underground pipework systems at petrol filling stations.
One of the requirements of these specifications is the need
for regular monitoring of product quality.
| To
address this need, ERA Technology is establishing the
FUELSTAR (fuel pipework surveillance, testing and review)
scheme which will: |
| |
Monitor products at regular intervals
|
| |
Review conformance with specification |
| |
Issue a renewable licence which should
entitle the manufacturer to use of the IP mark |
|
Publicise positive product compliance
|

Certificates of Compliance for Underground Petrol
Pipework
ERA Technology Ltd has issued Certificates of Compliance
for the following products against the specifications: IP1
Institute of Petroleum Performance Specification for Underground
Pipework Systems at Petrol Filling Stations, November 1995,
ISBN 0 85293 164 6. Shell Shell Retail International - Pipework
performance specification and supplier evaluation –
Retail Engineering Document OBMR/12, Version 1.0, January
1996, or Version 2, March 1998. IP2 Institute of Petroleum
Performance Specification for Underground Pipework Systems
at Petrol Filling Stations, Second Edition, February 2001,
ISBN 0 85293 323 1 ML Manufacturing Licence issued in accordance
with Annex A of IP2 (Surveillance Scheme).
Certificates of Compliance are listed unless they or the
products to which they refer have been withdrawn or superseded.
Manufacturing Licences are listed during the period of their
validity only. The detailed schedule of parts covered by a
Certificate is listed in the associated ERA report whose number
is shown on the Certificate.
IP2 Certificates provide a full list of approved parts. Any
conditions applying to a Certificate (e.g. bend radius, requirements
for marking) are shown on the Certificate.
Compliance with the Shell performance specification does
not imply any form of approval by Shell Retail International.
The Shell performance specification applies to flexible and
semi-flexible plastic pipework only.
Requests for copies of Certificates should in the first instance
be addressed to the company listed.

The benefits
Manufacturers will be able to demonstrate continuing compliance
to the IP specification: a powerful marketing tool. Purchasers,
licensing authorities and installation companies will be able
to examine the current status of products covered by the FUELSTAR
scheme on the website, enabling purchase decisions to be based
upon the latest information. Testing will be undertaken by
ERA's laboratory that is UKAS accredited, hence the
highest standards are assured.
