Polished cross sections provide a valuable means of assessing the internal interfaces of components, where problems often occur. For example the chip attachment to the header or lead-frame is important in power semiconductor devices. The techniques are also useful for examining Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs), glass-to-metal seals, joints, contacts in connectors and vias in printed circuit boards.
