What's New

ERA invests in state-of-the-art scanning electron microscopy and analysis system
ERA has operated a client-focused SEM service for over 30 years and aims to provide the very best through a combination of expert and experienced staff and the latest technology. ERA’s new system offers some major new capability to clients including much greater analysis sensitivity (particularly useful for RoHS testing), handling of uncoated samples and variable pressure operation.

ERA launches RoHS product assessment service
Knowing how much and exactly what needs to be done to demonstrate due diligence is difficult. Testing of products and components for the restricted substances can be expensive unless it is applied with discrimination. ERA can guide you through the assessment of any product or component to target your resources in the most cost effective way to minimise risk.

Progress on ERA review of Categories 8 & 9 for the RoHS Directive
ERA would like to thank the many stakeholders who have actively engaged in the ongoing study for the European Commission to determine if Category 8 (medical devices) and Category 9 (monitoring and control instruments) products can be included within the scope.

ERA presented its interim findings to the EC and invited stakeholders in April and laid out a number of options which could be considered as well as detailed review of some of the many exemption requests. The project concludes in July after which the EC must consider what further steps it should take.

RoHS exemptions status
With the deadline only days away, over 70 exemption requests which have been subject to a formal EC stakeholder consultation remain pending. It is hoped that some will be considered at the next TAC meeting but many are likely to remain unresolved. A comprehensive status report on exemptions - current, rejected and pending - is given in the latest edition of RE4view.

RoHS enforcement guidance published
After much speculation, guidance on how RoHS enforcement authorities will seek to enforce the Directive was published in May. The guide covers principles of enforcement, documentation requirements, compliance requirements and testing.

ERA was involved as technical adviser during the development of this guide. Its implications are considered in the latest issue of RE4view.

DTI website unavailable
The DTI has been experiencing IT problems with its extremely useful RoHS/WEEE website www.dti.gov.uk/sustainability. This has now been resolved and a new site is now operational www.dti.gov.uk/innovation/sustainability/index.html
