What's New

ERA review of RoHS Directive exemptions for EC nears completion

A preliminary report and presentation to the EC Technical Adaptation Committee (TAC), given in mid October, were well received. The final report was issued prior to the meeting of the TAC on 10 December. It is understood that the TAC voted in favour of a motion amending the Annex to RoHS. We will publish more details when they are made public.

New project - developing a quick test for tin whiskers
Tin whiskers grow from the surface of tin plated surfaces and cause expensive failures. Crucially, they are not apparent or detectable after assembly and commonly do not begin to develop for months or even years afterwards. Electron Backscattered Diffraction Analysis (EBSD) offers potential as a quick test which would be invaluable to producers. ERA is proposing to evaluate EBSD through a joint sponsored project and is actively seeking sponsors.

Features

Evaluation of ED-XRF as a RoHS Analysis and Enforcement Technique
Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis potentially offers quick and easy analysis of the substances covered by RoHS. It can certainly detect lead, cadmium, mercury, bromine and chromium, but how does ED-XRF data from the analysis of electronic parts translate into quantified, accurate and reproducible data of use in assessing the RoHS compliance of products?

To answer these questions, ERA carried out an investigation of a standard desktop system kindly provided by manufacturer Shimadzu via Kratos Analytical, their UK agent.
