ERA wins EC contract for review of RoHS Directive exemptions
The RFA Group at ERA has been awarded a contract by the European Commission to review eleven specific exemptions under the RoHS Directive. This study is intended to clarify the case for each exemption and ensure that legislation takes account of advances in more environmentally friendly technologies as they are developed by industry.

The project is due to complete in December with a preliminary report to the EC Technical Adaptation Committee (TAC) in mid October. If you have any data to support an exemption please do contact us.

ERA and Shimadzu collaborate on evaluation of ED XRF for RoHS testing
Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis (ED-XRFA) is often cited as a technique for quick and easy analysis of the substances covered by the RoHS Directive. ED-XRF can certainly be used to detect lead, cadmium, mercury, bromine and chromium. The question is how does ED-XRF data from the analysis of electronic parts translate into quantified, accurate and reproducible data which is of use in assessing the RoHS compliance of products?

The RFA group is presenting the interim results of this investigation at the October IPC conference in Frankfurt.

How to comply with the RoHS Directive
The RoHS Directive clearly states that producers shall comply with its terms but does not explain HOW. With the deadline only 22 months away, producers are under severe pressure to determine exactly how to go about this. ERA is working with governments and producers to address this.
