Aerospace will be covered by WEEE
& RoHS directives
There is debate within the aerospace industry concerning
if and how the WEEE and RoHS directives will affect it.
Is aerospace included? Are there exemptions that cover
this industry? It appears from scrutiny of the latest
versions of these two directives that both will apply
to certain categories of electrical and electronic equipment
used in the civil aerospace industry. So aerospace is
not exempt from either directive and this is discussed
in the next issue of RE4view. |

Lead free
soldering
The RoHS directive will ban the use of lead
in solders in 8 categories of electrical and electronic
equipment sold from the 1st January 2006. This is a little
under 3½ years away but an increasing number of
manufacturers are starting to look into manufacturing
using lead-free solders, some started several years ago.
Manufacturers will no longer be able to sell equipment
containing lead solders after the deadline and so will
want to have used up all of their stocks. This means starting
to manufacture up to 6 months earlier, in mid 2005. To
be in a position to do this, the correct alloy must be
chosen, lead-free components sourced, equipment modified
or replaced (some have long lead times) and new production
processes optimised. There are no drop-in replacements
for the traditional lead-free solders and so extensive
testing may also be required. All of this will take a
considerable time and so now would seem to be a good time
to start on the process of changing to lead-free. |
