ERA has provided key skills and innovative Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) measurement technology to ensure the successful commissioning of the longest submarine cable (of its type) in the world. The new 290km Basslink HVDC interconnector plays a vital role in establishing two way electricity power transfers between the Australian states of Victoria and Tasmania.
The interconnector route map (see below left) shows the location of the two converter stations at their points of connection to the existing AC systems; at George Town in the North of Tasmania, and Loy Lang near Traralgon in Victoria. The Basslink interconnector enhances security of supply on both sides of the Bass Strait; protecting Tasmania against the risk of drought-constrained hydro energy shortages while providing Victoria and southern states with secure renewable energy during times of peak demand.

ERA consultants were brought on board to undertake high power TDR testing during the interconnector commissioning stages. TDR involves injecting a high frequency signal into cables and measuring the time response. The technique provides critical data which can be used to identify possible damage or confirm the success of a repair at any point along a cable length.
This project demonstrates ERA's leading-edge expertise in providing TDR solutions for very long HV cable installations. ERA was also involved in the testing and commissioning of the
Isle of Man interconnector between Blackpool and the Isle of Man, and is the only company offering such high power TDR testing in the UK. |
