Following the success of ERA's UK training seminars on the life prediction of geosynthetics, ERA has worked with the Süddeutsches Kunststoff-Zentrum (SKZ) in Germany to organise and present a German language version. The event was held in Würzberg earlier this year and attracted over 40 delegates from four countries (see below).

Geosynthetics are plastic and textile materials used in civil engineering as filters, drainage components, reinforcements, moisture barriers and landfill liners. In these applications, they are typically installed in geotechnical (soil) structures and must comply with environmental legislation and remain 'fit for use' for a specified product life, which can exceed 100 years.

Dr John Greenwood of ERA is an international expert in life prediction and testing of geosynthetics. At SKZ, he presented lectures on the basics of life prediction, the effects of load and accelerated creep testing. With many other presentations covering everything from 'an introduction to geosynthetics' to issues such as 'weathering and observations on exhumed materials', delegates enjoyed a valuable opportunity to discuss and debate industry issues with leading experts.

The seminar was a great success, highlighting that ERA can provide specialist expertise and facilities to test the long-term mechanical properties of geosynthetics as well as durability assessments for their intended use.
