Picture a crowded room. You are in discussion with a colleague standing next to you when nearby, a debate starts-up between another group of people. Their voices are loud, to the point where it is difficult to hear or be heard in your own discussion!

This is a simple analogy of a common problem for co-located radio communication systems. Whenever several transceiver systems are operated in close proximity, there is likely to be coupling between the antennas such that one or more signals from the systems operating in 'transmit' are coupled into the antennas of those operating in 'receive' causing interference or total signal blocking. The situation becomes even more complex with modern, frequency-hopping radio installations.

ERA's Electronic Systems business was contracted by Chelton Electrostatics Ltd to deliver the next generation of RF interference cancellation system. ERA has produced a miniaturised version of Chelton's successful INCAN^TM (INterference CANcellation) product, named mINCAN^TM.

t mINCANTM RF interference cancellation systems have applications across military, aerospace, emergency service and commercial platforms.

In a mINCAN^TM system, a sample of each interfering RF signal is fed into the unit, adjusted in magnitude and phase, and the resultant signal injected into the feed line between the receiver antenna and each receiver. Cancellation is achieved by monitoring the residual composite signal, which enters a control loop, to effectively phase out or cancel the interfering signal.

mINCAN^TM was developed using leading-edge expertise in RF interference cancellation techniques. It is another successful demonstration of ERA's world-class design consultancy services for electronics, sensors and wireless communications.
