ERA to support European Commission RoHS recast impact assessment study
ERA Technology will be working with BIO Intelligence Service supporting the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) recast impact assessment study. The European Commission has awarded a contract to BIO Intelligence Service with the support of ERA Technology to carry out the impact assessment of the changes that have been introduced since the Commission’s original proposals for the revised directive were published in December 2008 and the recast RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU which has now been adopted. The key issues to be considered are:
- the extension in product scope – including category 11 (other products),
- how compliance with the RoHS concentration limits for the restricted substances can be made more workable – for example for coatings and very small components?
The approach that will be used for the study will be to collect data from stakeholders for newly included and newly excluded products to evaluate costs and benefits from the financial, environmental, economic and social perspectives.
Stakeholders such as manufacturers and trade associations are invited to participate in the study and can register at the study website http://rohs.biois.com for more information. Those contributing to the study will be asked to provide data on costs of complying with the directive such as the cost of converting product designs so that they comply, the cost of on-going compliance and CE marking and the benefits such as the reduction in use of the hazardous substances.
The study is also looking at the definition of homogeneous materials, particularly relating to coatings and suggestions will be welcome.
