Assembly Technician

The Antenna and Electronic Systems business unit provides world-class electronics products with embedded software for defence, aerospace, law enforcement/national security and commercial applications. The business has a heritage of over 30 years experience in the development of leading-edge products at the forefront of technology.

A dramatic increase in orders for GPR systems means we have a requirement for an Assembly Technician to assist in the general prototype build of PCBs and electronic assemblies including handheld and multi-channel GPR and other radar-based equipment and repairs and updates to production PCB boards work on current and future projects.

The Role
Working as part of a team you will be required to work to tight timescales building, repairing and assembling mixed technology electronic hardware and electronic equipment, keeping accurate records, and carrying out tasks as directed by the relevant project engineer/manager.

Primary Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities will involve the repair and update of tx/rx boards and building and assembling prototype radar based equipment and other prototype electronic hardware.

Qualities and Competencies
The right candidate will have experience of building, assembly and repair of mixed technology high frequency electronic hardware/electronic systems, be able to keep accurate records, and work to tight deadlines.

Requirements
Previous experience in a similar role essential
Experience of working to IPC standards would be an advantage.

Salary Indicator
£25,000 - £30,000 p.a. dependant on experience

To support the growth of this business, we are looking for an energetic Business Development Executive to join our team. You will be responsible for the generation, development and delivery of sales of our AccessERA service to UK-based engineering companies and product manufacturers.

Requirements
The position requires a good technical background to enable your understanding of the expertise within Cobham Technical Services and the benefits of the AccessERA service to customers. A HNC/HND in a relevant engineering discipline is essential although a degree is preferred.

Technical Executive

The Electronic Systems Department has a key career opportunity for a Technical Executive with expertise in radar engineering. The role of the person appointed will be to provide in-depth technical support to the existing team currently transitioning extensive R&D programmes into new products.

Primary Responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership for the development of capability in surveillance and land system radars through the range of product development from R&D, technical demonstrator and production. Responsibilities within the role include the technical management and co-ordination of engineering teams to broaden and develop existing competencies and technical capabilities in the field of radar engineering.  Specifically the role will involve the capture of technical requirements from clients and the translation of these requirements to top level specifications. The ability to provide technical leadership over the life cycle of a project including technical support of sales, proposal preparation to secure new business and technical management up to final production is a key attribute of the role.

Qualities/Competencies
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate competencies in radar system engineering, from system design and modelling, advanced radar signal processing, proving trials and product development from S-Band to W Band.  Experience in the field of military radar will be an advantage. The right candidate will have demonstrable team working and problem solving skills as well as technological foresight based on experience in radar systems design and development.

Requirements
A Masters in radar system engineering or equivalent is essential; a PhD in radar system engineering or an allied discipline would be advantageous.

Application Engineer

Vector Fields Software produces the world's most advanced software for modelling and analysing electromagnetic equipment and effects. Based at Kidlington, near Oxford, Vector Fields is a division of Cobham Technical Services, a subsidiary of Cobham plc.

Vector Fields has developed two powerful generic modelling tools (Opera and Concerto), which deliver design solutions for a wide range of specialised applications, including a diverse range of machines and consumer devices. They also provide highly accurate solutions for Defence and Transport customers, specialised modelling techniques for a wide range of scientific, medical & industrial clients as well as a wide range of communication products.

The Role
Reporting to the Support Manager the Application Engineer will provide support to existing and prospective users of Vector Fields Opera software, in particular for the simulation of Electrical Machines. Key to this support will be the responsibility for the development and maintenance of the Opera Electrical Machines Environment.

Primary responsibilities

  • Providing external User Support including answering existing and prospective user questions on the capabilities and use of the Opera Software specifically in the areas of Electrical Machines (Motors, Generators, Transformers).
  • Facilitating training new users on the ‘Opera Software Suite’ and ‘Electrical Machine simulation using Opera’.
  • Testing Opera releases and interfacing with the Development team.
  • Ensuring correct and up to date documentation including updating users, marketing and training documentation.
  • Running Pre-Sales Benchmarks including assisting the Sales Team by running simulations for prospective users.
  • Attending conferences to assist the Sales Team with prospective customer enquiries.
  • Co-authoring technical papers and presentations for conferences.
  • The development and maintenance of the Electrical Machines Environment. This is a system of scripted programs for electrical machines design and simulation using the Opera Software, a key responsibility for the role will be further enhancement and support for this system.

Requirements
A Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with demonstrable knowledge of Electrical Machines theory (Motors/Generators/Transformers) Computer programming experience would be of benefit.

Graduate Electrical Engineer

Primary Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be working as part of a team on electrical engineering projects in Industry, Utilities and Commerce at all voltages from transmission to low voltage final circuits. Responsibilities include conducting testing, assessment and analysis on electrical plant including static and rotating equipment. Tests are held both at Cobham’s site in Leatherhead and on client’s sites. Training will be provided in general site safety and High Voltage testing techniques.

The successful candidate will be contributing to the investigation of failures of electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear and rotating electrical machines. The role also involves writing technical reports for submission to clients as well as costing and preparing proposals for clients.

The role will involve working in the offices and workshops at Leatherhead as well as work on client sites in the UK and overseas.

Professional activities

Graduate engineers will be allocated a personal mentor and will be encouraged to work towards Chartered Engineer status.

Engineers will be encouraged to promote Cobham’s business through the writing of technical papers, presentation at conferences, supporting marketing and discussions with clients both in person, by telephone, letter and email.

Qualities and Competencies

The post requires regular contact with clients, mostly in the UK or on occasions with UK based clients working overseas. Therefore, the candidate must be fluent in English (spoken and written) and possess good communications skills. Some previous experience with an engineering company would be of benefit.

Requirements

  • A degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or materials science. Electrical engineering preferred.
  • Be in possession of a clean UK driving licence

Systems Safety Engineer (Rail)

The System Safety Engineering & Assurance Group of Cobham Technical Services (part of Cobham Plc) has an immediate requirement for a qualified Rail Systems Safety engineer, ideally with lead auditing know-how and expertise. Based in Leatherhead (home based workers may be considered) candidates will be required to work closely with our Transport Service Line head and domain experts.

Successful candidates will have a strong system safety background and will be required to deliver a wide range of services encompassing all aspects of the safety lifecycle. Applicants will also be required to demonstrate competency in project management and/or new business development.

Primary responsibilities
Applicants should be able to demonstrate successful delivery of rail projects in one or more of the following system safety engineering disciplines:

  • Independent safety assessments and audits (functional and process)
  • Software assurance activities
  • Hazard identification and risk analysis
  • Hazard log development and management
  • Safety arguments and case preparation including report writing
  • Safety and project planning and management
  • Safety management systems development and implementation
  • Previous Lead Auditing experience advantageous

Requirements
Working within a team oriented environment, all candidates will have:

  • A degree in a relevant system and or engineering subject
  • A wide range of professional engineering practices and have proven understanding of the rail industry including:
    • A working knowledge and experience complying with sector based standards and guidelines including CENELEC 50128 and The Yellow Book.
    • The ability to complete tasks to time and budget in accordance with agreed client specifications
    • The ability to produce high quality technical and progress reports
    • Supporting business development through the successful extension of ongoing projects and writing winning proposals
    • Experience of working with clients face to face (preferably including on site experience)
Desirable attributes for successful candidates will include:
  • Chartered Engineering (or evidence attaining to CE application)
  • Acknowledged consultancy skills; being able to communicate at senior levels, influence and guide decisions and solutions, provide impartial advice in challenging client-facing and stakeholder environments. This should be complemented by the ability to robustly argue and present complex solutions and ideas
  • Detailed working knowledge of the Rail sector and the ability to identify and develop business opportunities alongside representing group and company interests at client sites
