DO-254 and the Use of PLDs in Military Avionics

The IPT DO-254 Guidance has now been published. A copy of the report can be downloaded here >>>

Complex Electronic Hardware, CEH, and Programmable Logic Devices, PLDs, such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays, FPGAs, are becoming increasingly common in avionics systems, including those for military applications. Though utilising such technology can have distinct advantages [speed etc.] over using the traditional software/processor approach there are a number of issues associated with their use [unanticipated interactions etc.]

Recognising that there are definite pro and cons in using emerging CEH technology the ASSC aims to provide the MoD with the information it requires to make the most appropriate acquisition decision. The ASSC also wishes to support suppliers in the delivery of good quality dependable systems containing CEH. To enable us to fulfil these objectives we are currently undertaking a series of workshops focusing on:

CEH technology – What’s available and what are the benefits and issues associated with using the different types
DO-254 - The use of the guidelines as a means of developing PLDs for safety related and safety critical systems
Certifications – How does certification differ, if at all, for a system containing CEH

These workshop will allow us to educate both suppliers and procurers, and elicit experience and opinion on the topics of interest.

The first of these workshops was undertaken at ERA Leatherhead on the 6 th of July 2006 and focussed on the first two issues, that is CEH Technology and DO-254. The presentations given are available for download:

Introduction to Complex Electronic Hardware – Clive Lee [powerpoint] / [pdf]
Introduction to DO-254 – Clive Lee [powerpoint] / [pdf]
Practical Experience of Developing an Avionics Application containing CEH to DO-254 – Dr. Duncan Brookes [powerpoint] / [pdf]

Further IPT Workshops have been undertaken at RAF Wyton and Abbey Wood
