RE4view Newsletter - Issue 48

RE4view 48 has something of a Nordic feel featuring as it does two in depth articles on efforts spearheaded by the Swedish Presidency to recast both the RoHS and WEEE; hopefully reducing conflict between the two by editing the scope of both. Elsewhere there is a report by a Swedish NGO on restricted and hazardous substances in consumer products which could have serious implications for the electrotechnical industry. On the Eco-design Directive some useful guidance on the Standby Regulation is reviewed, as is the first industry voluntary agreement, on complex set-top boxes, and the revocation of September’s ban on tungsten halogen lamps. European battery registration information is covered as is the implementation into UK law of the market surveillance requirements Eco-design and Energy labelling Directives .

Developments in REACH legislation are also covered including analysis of the hotly awaited ECHA guidance on substance in articles and the current status defence exemption from this legislation. Industry insiders will also be keen to read about an important revision of the classification and labelling categories for chemicals. The reclassification of numerous substances is covered including many organic tin compounds.

There are also reports on chemical legislation across the Atlantic; specifically on the progress of the Canada’s federal Chemicals Management Plan and the ongoing spread of bans on polybrominated diphenyl ethers in various states of the US.
